Common Challenges Integrating HPC and Cloud Resources in HEP Computing
High energy physics is facing an unprecedented computing challenge in preparation for the next phase of the large hadron collider (LHC). The event complexity and data collecLon rate will both increase, substantially exceeding the gains expected from technology evolution. The experiments are actively pursuing improvements in sofware and techniques that reduce the resource gap, but new resources will be needed.
In this talk I will present the common challenges in adopting HPC centers and cloud facilities to utilize new resource opportunities. The large scale that can be achieved at HPC sites and clouds is similar and drives the development of tools and services to support the bursts.
We will discuss the development activities as well as the progress in demonstrating the use of both HPC and cloud resources and plans for the future.
