Alun Ashton, PSI

Biography

Alun Ashton holds a degree in Biochemistry, a masters degree in computational biology and a PhD in computer modelling of biological synchrotron and neutron data. Until 2004 he at Daresbury Laboratory UK on the UK Computational Collaborative Project for Macromolecular Crystallography (MX) where he initiated work on experiment information management systems. During this time he was involved in various EU Framewrk V initiatives and UK eScience initiatives such as eHTPX which aimed to improve automation, data and metadata capture and remote access of experiments. From 2004 until 2019 he led the Data Analysis Software Group at Diamond Light Source, UK leading on a range of open source analysis tools for automating interpretation of experimental data as well as DLS’s data archive policy and data catalogue strategy. He is now Head of Science IT at PSI with a broader role covering full experiment and data lifecycle. He has been actively involved in a number of Swiss, UK and European (FPV, VI, VII, H2020) initiatives bridging experimentalists, data managers and software developers including ExPaNDS, PANOSC, EOSC-Life, Instruct-ERIC, INSTRUCT-ULTRA iNext, PaNData, CALIPSOPplus.
