Digital Electronics at the Atomic Limit

Exponential increases in tooling costs for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS)/von Neumann architectures have motivated multi-scale codesign simulations to find new opportunities. To this end, we propose atomic precision advanced manufacturing (APAM) as a plaform to integrate analog and digital functionality through the precise placement of atoms in Si – at extremely high doping concentrations.

APAM enables access to digital and analog device concepts that are far afield from those typically included in simulations, providing a basis for discussion of the engineering and science challenges and the strategy of what types of devices will be most impactful to meet future computing needs.
